Document Summary

Contrast is the ratio of luminance between difference in luminance and background luminance. White on black background has more contrast than black on white background (can be shown using di/i) The eye can adapt to changes in luminance by means of a sliding scale to prevailing luminance, as well as respond to changes in albedo (an intrinsic property of objects) which is important for recognition. Ciliary muscles alter lens to focus light onto retina. Relaxation- lens stretches lens into a more oval shape. Spherical aberration- cornea is more spherical than required, light from greater visual angle bend more. Scatter- light bounces off multiple surfaces in the eye. Diffraction- light passing through aperture spreads (smaller the hole, more spreading) Point spread- the overlap of light from two objects projected onto the retina; when two objects are really close to each other, the retina may have a hard time distinguishing between the two.
