Document Summary

Provide several distinct examples of descriptive moral claims. Descriptive sense of morality: the code of conduct people, in fact, believe in (or endorse) Tells us what people or society believe they should do. The patterns of behaviour pertaining to morality that we would describe people as having. The principles that people believe about morality. The moral rules that people actually follow. According to terry"s morality, one should always tip 18% at a restaurant. Perry"s morality tells us that we should abstain from drinking. Normative ethics: the moral rules that people should, in fact, follow. Normative requirements are universal (do not change over time, across persons, or places) Cultural relativism - the ethical/moral norms for a given society are determined by that society"s beliefs about morality/ethics. Cultural relativism is a challenge to normative ethics because beliefs about moral conduct vary from society to society, therefore morality is relative to each culture. Morality is not objective, morality is a matter of opinion.
