Nation states consist of two parts the state and the nation. The state is the set of institutions that possesses a monopoly on rule making through the regulation of political, economic and social interactions while also having the legitimate use of force within a bounded territory. The nation is composed of a group that exhibits solidarity in the face of other groups while seeking to control its own state, thereby forming a relationship between the members of the community and the institutions that control them. Members of the nation state feel connected to each other through language, ethnicity, culture and shared history. 19th century there were empires such as the ottoman empire or the mongol empire that consisted of people who had no shared nation hood with different languages, religions and nationalities with no specific border. The nation state originated from the treaty of westphalia in. 1648 which ended the thirty years war in europe.
