PSYA01 Lecture 1: Without Soul
The Revelation of the Soul
- Part of us thats ot phsical. Spiritual etities ad, as such, DO NOT cofor to atural
laws (scientific process thrown out)
- To pursue something scientifically one must first assume that the behaviour of that
living conforms to some sort of natural laws, laws that can eventually be understood,
specified, and used to predict future behaviour.
EARLY PSYCHOLOGY:
- Aiis concept that there is some force that makes things happen in specific ways
o E.g Volcano erupts, ppl think oh the gods are angry. Need to sacrifice a virgin
and throw her into the volcano to please them. (Volcano bound virgins)
- If a computer can do what a human can do, is the machine intelligent? Or is the human
not?
- Dualis
o Renee Descartes (1596-1650)
Before he firmly believed that things that mvmt is powered by the soul
Hydraulics were discovered; a statue moved by a machine. He re-
evaluated humans and animals
Cartesian Dualism concept that human nature has 2 distinct parts; 1 is
machine (biological) and the 2nd can be controlled by the soul (body is
puppet of the soul) through pineal gland (back of head).
Opened the door to human anatomy
Animals have no soul like car is hurt i a crash ad screeches
o John Locke (1632-1704)
Souls DONT eist. The id is a achie
La table rassa a blank slate, life shapes you (nurture)
Epiricis- father of scietific ethod we lear through the seses
o James Mill (1733-1836)
Materialism
No soul, no spirits, we are materially governed
o Luigi Galvani (1737-1798)
Biology frog legs move, applying static electricity on certain muscles
and nerves
MIND BLOWN dead body can move, proved that the body is a machine

o Johannes Muller (1801-1858)
Doctrine of Specific Nerve Energies (first textbook on this)
More interested in physiology - human body as a machine
o Pierre Florens (1774-1867)
Ablation Studies dissecting animal brains
Removed different parts of the brain and see if the animal behave
differently
Remove back of brain acted like they are blind
Remove one side other side of body would be paralyzed
Kinda proved that the brain is MODULAR (machine-like)
o Paul Broca (1824-1880)
Localization of Language
Doctor ran into patient that showed same symptoms; hear him fine but
they cat produce eaigful speech.
Asked patients like this to keep their brains to examine found all the
same results broca was damaged which was linked to speech.
Frankenstein was written around this time dismembered body parts, sewn together, and then
brought to life by electricity. Early philosopher/discoveries fuelled this idea.
