Language: a system for communicating w/ others using signals that are combined according to rules of grammar and convey meaning. Grammar: set of rules that say how units of language can be combined to make meaningful messages: categorize: we noun things when thinking, influencing our brain"s categ. All lang. share a simple structure of sound sets & sound combination rules in order to have meaning. Phonemes: building blocks ; smallest sound unit that"s seen as speech, not noise. eg) ba, pa: differ bc produced differently when spoken. Phonological rules: indicate how phonemes can be combined to make speech sounds. Eg) sound, ts ok in german, but not english. E. g) speech sound = p meaning = pat morpheme.
