Document Summary

The notion that we can measure your personality as a combination of the big 5 is oversimplified. The formula that defines us changes with the situation (the context) and we travel through many. In fact, several experiments show that humans have a strong tendency to conform when they find themselves in groups: 4 confederates and 1 real participant sit and answer questions. The confederates say a wrong answer, but the participant who answers last conforms. Confederate is always learner and participant is always the teacher. Teacher asks learner questions; if they get it right, no shock, but if they get it wrong, they will be administered a shock (voltage increases with each incorrect answer) Participant wants to stop, as they believe they are causing incredible pain to the other participant . The experimenter (authority figure) keeps telling them to continue and some follows. Outgroup experience, and studies have shown that experience with an outgroup reduces prejudicial behaviours and thoughts.
