Studying Psychology
- Psychology is the explicit study of how people think, feel, and behave
- Many themes and studies contained within the discipline
- Personality, learning and memory, social development, hormones and
behavior, abnormal behavior, relationships and emotion, clinical issues
How does Psychology Differ from Philosophy, the Humanities?
- All of these disciplines concerned with fundamental issues of human
experience
- Use of scientific method
- Other methods subject to serious limitations

Seven Limitations of Personal Experience
1. Confirmation Bias & Discounting Problem
a) Tend to seek out information that is consistent with our
expectations and discount information that is inconsistent
i. Lead to bias, prejudice, mislabel, treated differently
b) The way a question is worded may also influence outcome
i. Eye-witness testimony; look to proof someone is innocent;
comes with reputation
2. Inferences may be based on very little data
a) Behavior is not absolute: based on probability and a multiplicity
of factors
i. Extraverted or social people may be shy in certain
circumstance
ii. Shy or introverted people may be outgoing in some
circumstances
b) Limited information thus can lead to incorrect assessments
