Document Summary

Psyb65 lecture 1: basic structure of the brain. 2 major groups of ns: central and peripheral. V. little difference between brain and spinal cord. Mammalian brain divided into three components: forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain. Yellow area: two major components in hindbrain: medulla = basic process i. e. heartbeat and respiration. Brain stem = core of the brain closest portion the spinal crd. Cerebellum = sensory motor coordination used to coordinate the body. Responsible for reticular formation sleep wakefulness function. Damage to reticular formation go to sleep and don"t wake up = coma. Pink: forebrain (anterior in the brain) two components: thalamus and hypothalamus. Thalamus is dorsal (top of head) primitive; in more evolved animals , messages are relayed from thalamus to cerebral cortex (relay centre) Hypothalamus is ventral (beneath thalamus) controls the functions that keeps the individual and species alive. Involved in life processes i. e. territoriality, sexual reproduction. Lack of function does not lead to immediate death like the medulla.
