Document Summary

Visual agnosia: an inability to identify objects visually even though they can be identified using other senses (e. g. touch) Perception: the processing of sensory information in such a way that it produces conscious experience -> guides action in the world. Weiskrantz: blindsight suggests we may be able to perceive visual object with no conscious experience of it. People encode events in different ways: encoding: the process of transforming information into one or more forms of representation. The words arriving at your ear are physical, acoustic events -> encode these events as words. Wickens: process of encoding= unconscious, automatic and very fast. An event can be encoded along different dimensions simultaneously. Multidimensional encoding: a single word can be encoded in terms of: frequency of occurrence, physical characteristics (size, shape etc. ) and how we feel about it. Wickens showed that participants were able to say whether the stimulus word was pleasant/ unpleasant (without reporting that they have actually seen it)
