Initiates and regulates cognitions & emotions: important not only for producing the feeling state (emotion) but the behaviour and behaviour tendencies associated with the emotional response (complex actions of body) Limbic system & prefrontal cortex: key for emotional processes including emotion regulation. 2 of 53: only present in humans and large vertebrates, more complex: allow for a better processing of emotional stimuli. Ventral striatum (nucleus accumbens: reward, pleasure, part of the brain where dopamine is released during anticipation of things. E. g. pleasurable things we anticipate: drugs, sex, food, etc : activation are often seen during activations of positive or pleasant stimuli.
