Document Summary

Each person follows a developmental pathway; the life course of all humans as following a path/trajectory that may be littered with risk factors. Protective factors are characteristics or experiences that can shield from serious antisocial behaviour. Research shows that exposure to multiple risk factors most likely increases the probability that the child develops antisocial behaviour and other maladaptive behaviour. When risk factors are considered holistically it generally has a greater explanatory power than when each risk factor is considered individually. Cumulative risk (cr) model: the accumulation of risk factors in the absence of sufficient protective factors results in negative behavioural, emotional and cognitive outcomes. The (cr) model can be calculated by simply counting the number of risk factors.
