Document Summary

How child birth has changed: child birth in earlier times was a struggle with death for both the baby and the mother. By the 20th century, child birth became professionalized. Maternity hospitals were somewhat safer and hospital births reduced mortality for women. In1926, 18% of canadian deliveries took place in hospitals. In the earlier decades, midwives had no legal status unless they take an exam: a doula is an experienced mentor, coach, and helper who gives emotional support and information and stays beside a women during labour. Attended by doulas result in shorter labours, less anesthesia, and fewer c-sections deliveries than mother who did not have doulas. A doula helps the mother create a birth plan and supports the mother and her partner during labour and delivery. Improvements for prenatal assessments and care make it far more likely that a baby will be born healthy. Mortality rates for both children and mother decreased dramatically.
