Lecture 2: Brains and Behavior Review Notes Human are very territorial however we are more complex. We have boundaries and borders. We have customs and immigrations, we have passports and flags. We have the same behaviors but we have just more complex The Cerebral Cortex and the Different Lobes The Cerebral Cortex is not smooth. Because the cerebral cortex needs more space, it starts to fold within itself therefore forming mountains and valleys. These mountains and valleys are important because it tells us where we are. It gives us a clear location of where we are. The mountains are referred to as the gyrus or gyri. If you look at the top of the brain the two sides of the brain is not connected in any obvious way. The brain is divided to the right half and the left half which are referred to as hemispheres. They are connected by fiber pathways. Your right hemisphere controls the left side of your body and gets information from the left hand side of your body. The two hemispheres are connected by a very broad pathway called the corpus callosum. The corpus callosum connects the brain at the same places on both sides of the hemispheres. Therefore we are looking at the back of the brain, on the left side it will connect to the back of the brain on the right side as well. There are three main salsai, when they get really big they are often referred to as fissures. o The longitudinal fissure separates the hemispheres in halfseparates the right hemisphere from the left hemisphere. Its a very deep grove. o The central fissure separates the anterior and the posterior part of the brain. It is present in both hemispheres. Separates the frontal and the parietal lobes. o The Sylvian or Lateral fissure: It separates out a lobe as well. Separates the temporal lobe. The Cerebral cortex is subdivided not only into the right side and the left side about also into lobes. There are four different lobes. Every lobe has a primary function and a primary cortex, which is the area in the cortex that deals with the primary function. Then there is associational cortex within each lobe. The primary cortex is the primary receptive area that is the area that receiving input for the lobe. It can also be a motor outputso it can be a sensory input or a motor output. The primary cortex is the part where it is receiving input directly. The associational cortex surrounds the primary cortex is beside the primary cortex. It is the computing power of the brain. It makes animals smarter. It is processing more complex phenomenon.
