Key Terms for the lecture on Jainism:
Karmamarga : way of work.
Ahimsa : means non_voilance, the highest possible value in Jainism. It is believed that the
non voilance is the supreme path(“ahimsa paramo damma.). Jainism is based on this principle.
They reject wearing le ather and eating meat. They always clean the f loor before sit.
Sramanas: the grops rejected the teachings of Vedas and( wandering monks)
karma (in the context of Jainism) : they believe karma to be material in nature. Karma is
the tiny substance attached to t he soul. Liberation is only possible if one can leave behind the
karma. Jainas practices tortures to get rid of karma and attain liberation. Desire leads to karma.
We bor n w ith a pure soul but get cor rupted according to the actions. Our thoughts are important
to determine the quality of karma.
Tirthank aras: builders of bridge across the ocean of death and birth.( path of attaining
nirvana. ) . there are 24 tirthankarasa. The first is the Rsabha . its believed that 23

Moksa : nirvana
Rsabha : first tirthankaras. He lived in jumbudipa(where humans live)
Mahavira: the last tirthankaras ao far. It is belived that the Jainism was given the present
for m by mahavira. He was referred as j ina after attaining the enlightenment.
Jina :victors who at t ain enlightenment.
Parsva : jain temple
Svatambaras: white clad.
Digambaras: sky clad
Acarya : community leader.
Anekanta : many side ness. One of the most important and fundementale doctrine in
Jainism. It refers to the principle of pluralism and multiplicity of viewpoints. Trut h and reality
can be perceived from different point of views.
Syadvada: One of the most impor tant and fundementale doctrine in Jainism
