good and evil gained by eating the fruit.
4creation story is known to be etiological because it offers explanations to to the reasons behind our
present circumstances

REWARD/PUNISHMENTReward: Finding the land of
freedom, punishment: If the people have gone against the
covenant and not obeyed the message of a certain prophet
(moses), a disastrous event may take place such as the
imprisonment in Egypt of the flood.
ISAAC HEBREW LINEAGE
ISHMAEL ARABS
JACOB (“ISRAEL”) ISRAELITESson of Isaac, wrestles with an
angel. Has a vision of a divine escalator seeing spiritual beings using it.
Joseph (Israels son) sets the scene for the Israelites to come to Egypt. Joseph (says
come over to the people of Israel during the drought) is the son of Jacob.
MOSES AND THE LAWa labourer in Egypt and gets mad at soldier and
kills him, and goes off wandering thinking hes in trouble, as Moses is wandering
around (significance is to find god), god speaks to him through burning bush.
2 KEY EXPERIENCES
1. BURNING BUSHfirst encounter with God linguistically. God tells
Moses to go back to free the people. Moses refuses god because he says he is
a bad speaker in public, but God says tell the people that “I am who I am”
(Yahweh) sent you.
Divine names are not written down, and are dealt with delicately, because it implies that
you have captured something and have power over something you have named.
Man Moses goes back to Egypt and tells the people to listen to him, but Pharaoh doesn’t
listen (because God has “Hardened” his heart – this implies God is maker of history).
Moses tells Pharaoh that a his city will be plagued by god if he doesnt listen, but to protect
the Hebrews from this plague god tells Moses to put lambs blood on all the doors of the
Hebrews (this is an Abrahamic gesture since Abraham sacrifices a lamb instead of his son).
Messenger of Death comes and kills Egyptian sons. Then the Hebrews escape via Reed Sea
and wander for 40 years to find the holy land.

62. MT. SINAIclear cut messages about the commandments from god.
7EXODUS - all Jewish people, whatever their origins, identify with the exodus
story which they understood as a metaphor of the transition from slavery to
freedom as a people under god s providence with a destiny and purpose.
They commemorate their participation in this event during the passover
festival.
TEN COMMANDMENTSFollow these to reach the promise
land
ARK OF THE COVENANT- Tabernacle – portable temple, stones
placed inside the ark of the covenant.
the ten commandments were kept in a chest called the ark of the covenant with two
cherubim inside a tent called the tabernacle. God was not to be depicted by any three
dimensional figure.
PROMISED LAND (CANAAN)Moses doesnt actually make it here because
god thinks he is too arrogant for not trusting gods decision of striking a rock with
his staff to make water (Moses strikes it too many times).
There is evidence of military campaigns going on in this land. 12 tribes of Hebrews are
divided into different land areas in Canaan, 11 of which are given territories and 1 is just a
priestly tribe. But eventually there is unification.
Messiah – a political/spiritual role. Means anointed one (sprinkled with something)
TEMPLE JUDAISM(pp. 83-88)
KINGDOM OF JUDAH
SAUL DAVID SOLOMON
DAVID: CAPITAL = JERUSALEM david was idealized for his military
skills and talented musically, hence he wrote the book of psalms
SOLOMON: FIRST TEMPLE (~950 BCE)centralizes worship by
building a temple, celebrating things like Passover are done here. First temple
that houses the Ark of the Covenant. But Solomon allows foreign deities into
his temple and has a bad ending to his life.
god choses kings (first saul, david, David's successors) to help his people deal with the
canaanites and philistines.
david, a young shepherd beats goliath and becomes king. he then captures jerusalem, also
known as the city of david.
solomon, davids son takes over the throne and becomes obsessed with buildings and builds
