Labelling & De-labelling
-was defined as a mental illness before 1974 in the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of
Mental Disorders (DSM)
-after that, gay activists were seeking to de-stigmatize homosexuality (de-label)
-center in Freudian therapy
-DSM task force tried to eliminate neuroses as a mental disorder (de-label)
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- In 1971, Vietnam veterans returned from war
-soldiers always have a hard time readjusting to civilian life after war
-in 1974, there was a recession
-tried to label it as a disorder to get compensation money
Self-Defeating Personality Disorder (SDP)
-by calling this a mental illness, psychiatrists were guilty of blaming the victim
-1994 DSN de-labelled this
Culture & Mental Health
-mental disorders are shaped by things other than scientific evidence
-social values, political forces subjective
-at the start of the 19th century, in Canada the federal govt recognized one mental
disorder, imbecility/insanity
-by 1975, DSN listed 106 mental disorders
-by 1994, DSN recognized 297 mental disorders
-in 2001, the Canadian Mental Health Association estimated that 1 in 5 Canadians
will be effected w/ a mental health disorder once in their lives
-most common disorder is depression
Mental Health Labelling A Growth Industry
Medical labelling has increased for the following reasons:
-stress society demands of work increased overtime
-in the modern world, traditional institutions that used to deal with mental
health have been losing their authority
- the family, religion, community has been weakened
-pharmaceutical corporation sell drugs
-most successful drug, Prozac an anti-depressant, repackaged as Serafem &
marketed it to women suffering from pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PDD)
-Eli Lilly is the company that sells Prozac
-Made $6.5 billion in revenues
