Demands conformity, form relationships and develop shared ideas on how to keep those relationships. Must consider scales and context - act differently as members of a nation than a partner in a relationship, differently between parents and friends. Can develop deep ties between members - loyalty to organization, anxiety if perceived to act disloyal. Difficult to disobey authority - ridicule, ostracism, punishment. Milgram study - separating people from the negative effects of their actions increases the likelihood of compliance. Degree of trust in the belief that authority knows what they"re doing. Bureaucracy: large impersonal organization comprising many clearly defined positions arranged in a hierarchy - has permanent, salaried staff of qualified experts and written goals, rules, procedures. Staff members find ways to run bureaucracy more effective.
