CHAPTER 9
MARTIN LUTHER'S IDENTITY CRISIS
Who am i? whats my place in adult hood? traumatizing incident as a kid, figured out an answer of
identity and startd a movement, soon becoming the protestant reformation (started th emassive
religious movement. a sense of identity that providid his life with a sense of purpose
INCIDENT # 1: Fit in the choir: the incident where he fell in the ground. terror and confusion of a
young man who has come to deny his assumption about his place in the world, who he is and how
he fits in the adult world. he felt cut off from all that of his previous life that was meaningful. it is in
part of 2 other events
INDICENT # 2: while following the career path his parents laid out for him. going to uni, hopping
away, sturuck by lightning, falls to the ground and yells "i wanna be a monk" tadadada and so he
does. the end now we can all go home.. after 4 more chapter 8-) i joking!.. he becomes a monk.
eriksons version of the story: deeper doubt and ambivalence (having conflicting feelings)
hallucinated devils presence.. saw him in people ( ppl he hated) responding to them how he
wud respond to the devil aka "old evil foe" . some next pope has his own thing goingin the
church, who was luther competition, so he became the devil later, with all these evil and
kniving church policies the other pope had going on.. gangstaaazz.. ahhaha buy salvation
with money LOL. roman church=enemy so he wanted alternative image for self, new
identity
INCIDENT#3: some new insight on the lines "the just shall live by faith" so gods more directly
accessible to the common person than the orthodox church god. like ERIKSON SAYS: identity is a
characteristic developmental adaptation, resolution of important life tasks during particular stage of
development.
dude went from high NAch (youth)- a High NPow (midlife). he was Neurotic and
conscienceinkjhfsjhfteous [stubbown, obsessive, agressive, hard working, strong willed. the txtbook
author says the devil could have been a self of luther.
LEOVINGER (ego makes sense of exp) vs ERIKSON (id, intim, gener):
erikson: emo and socio aspects of development
leovinger: cognition and knowing
ERIK ERIKSON'S THEORY OF PSYCHO SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Developmental stages in child hood
freud was strongest influence. evolution of sexual drives from birth to puberty. libido: energy from
sexual drives. 5 stages of libido development. ine ach stage libido develops thru a particular body
zone called Erogenous zone:ie mouth in the first stage.
first 5 of eriksons stages paralel freuds, the later 8 expand beyond to midd age and later years.
all of eriksons theory has interpersonal, social, cultural and historic context in which developmental
tasks have diff meanings.
each stage has polarity. positive feature VS negative feature and this sets the psychosocial conflict.
they create a central conflict that defines the stage.
theres a question and theres an answer in each stage, u might not be asking it, but ur development
is.. da fuq? :| who am i.. i am neooo.. matrixxx bla blabla.. (not in the text book) development is
structured as tho asking a question.
