PSYCHOLOGY OF PERSONAL CONSTRUCTS
We are like computers (machines.)of which the output is human behaviour
Social cognitive approaches to personality: human beings are complex information-processing
systems that operate in social environment. our perception and impression of others is the most
important input (shapes and shaped by our perception). focus on how people make and use mental
representation of others and their social and how those representations are implicated in social
GEORGE KELLY'S THEORY of personal constructs: first social cognitive theory ever developed.
o people act by virtue of being alive (no shit sherlock, thanks for your amazing theory on
20 pages of the txt book.. douche bag)
o he dissmissed motivation: only motivation is to predict what will happen to them.
predicta nd control events, what world has in store for us
o we classify our worlds by developing PERSONAL CONSTRUCTS: characteristic ways on
constructing how somethings are alike and diffirent from one another
o of which every characteristic is bipolar and dichotomous (o wow what a new and
different theory -_-, bitch repeats the tension thing that all other psychs have been
o constructs are not fixed, they are like hypothesis to be testes. serevs as an important
starting poitn. anticipate behavior about people, what may or may not happen next
(anticipation guised behavioru and experience)
o ORGANIZATION COROLLARY
each person develops their own constructs and puts more constructs int here in
hierarchy (grouping the groups) --> Super ordinate (grouping constructs) &
Subordinal (being grouped constructs) PART OF THE "ORGANIZATION
o "Indivituality corollary":
each persons construct system is unique, everyone divides up subjective
o "Sociality corollary": see the world thru their eyes. construct their world in ur eyes
o RANGE COROLLARY":
within a construct system, particular constructs differ from one another with
the RANGE OF CONVINIENCE AKA "
o "Fundamental Postulate":
psychologically channelized in ways in which you anticipate events
o "Modulation corollary":
some are highly permeable, others are not: permeable :open to modification &
new elements (open minded individual) being complete permable is not good,
because you change with every event. have some stability jeebusss.
o "Fragmentation corollary":
when peosons constructs are mutually incompatible and contradictory
(fragmented), they have difficulty making consistent sense of the world
in his world the big and bad "unconscious" self is ntohing but a bunch of
construscts that are non verbal, submerged and suspended, unable to
name them (bastard child) so were not aware of them.. lame excuse to
be ignoring a construct, poor bastard construct
fragmented experience wil have lots fo these bastard constructs that u
dont know of, but shape and "channelize" your experience
o "COnstruction corollary": anticipate events by constructing their replications o "Dichotomy corollary": composed of a finite number of dichotomous constructs
o "Choice Corollary": chose for ur self the alternatives in dichotomous constructs (for
greater possibility of anticipation for extension& definition of ur system.
o "Experience Corollary": ur constructionb system varies as u successfully anticipate
events by replication.
o "Community Corollary": employ constructs similar to that of another. so ur exp are
similar to those of another as well.
o anxiety: when people experience the recognition of events that u face, lie outside ur
range of convinience, (exp which u anticipated wrong and werent prepared for, you get
anxious.. no duh!)
anxiety is a fear of the unknown, confusion that cant be understood.
o guilt: perception of ones apparent dislodgement from his core role structure (who u r in
relation to others, ie parents - embedded in your general construct system)
so guilt is when ur no longer living in accordance with valued aspects of ur
personal construct system
EXPLORING PERSONAL CONSTRUCTS: THE REP TEST (kelly)
o REP TEST: explore personal constructs in people's lives.
o compare ppl who play important roles in ur life
o 15 roles, , group them by their numbers based on how similar or different they are
(under construct category)
o then consider ur constructs an d see which r meaningful to u
o ppl who havemanyc onstucts have high levels of cognitive complexity (See world in
hgihly diferentiated manner vs ppl with les constructs = simple
o people with similar constructs tend to becoem close friends and remain friends for
o simialrity of constrcust was a beter predictor of friendship and similarity on self reports
o get together noth the same kind of ways you behave in, but the same way in which u
see the world. sharing meanin g= more impo than doing same things.
importnce of social cognitive adaptation in human personality and the role of mental
representation of self and others in everyday behaviours.
