Sex, we told students, was what was ascribed by biology : anatomy, hormones and physiology. Gender, we said was an achieved status: that which is considered through physiological, cultural, and social means. Sex hardly seemed a given" in the context of research that illustrated the someimes ambiguous and oten conlicing criteria for its ascripion. And gender seemed much less an achievement" in the context of the anthropological, psychological and social imperaives we studied the division of labor, the formaion of gender ideniies and the social subordinaion of women by men. Doing gender undertaken by women and men whose competence as member of society is hostage to its producion. Doing gender involves a complex of socially guided perceptual, interacional and micro poliical aciviies that cast paricular pursuits as expressions of masculine and feminine natures. Both gender role and gender display focus on behavioral aspects of being a woman or a man.
