Degree of blackness: evolutionary scale. Based on the colour of skin, the
“blacker” one was, the more laborious his job was.
Euramericans drew conclusions about others based on the degree of
“blackness” of their skin.
Before civil rights movement, NG always photographed white people in a
superior position to black people.
After the civil rights movement, the white person was removed from the
photograph, symbolizing the offensiveness of portraying the black people as
labourers and the white people as superiors. (Black people continued to be
portrayed as labourers).
Individuals coded as black were more likely to be shown in high levels of
activity, strenuous work, or athletics, while white were engaged in low level activity,
seated, reclining, manipulating things with their hands (no hard labour). Those
coded bronze were doing things in between that (walking, herding animals).

“These stories tell the Euramerican public that their race prejudice is

technologically backward, and superstitious some still are.” Pp. 25
