Language is used for communication, but it is unique in its own way. It is also a means to interact not just communicate with people. The epistemology of language comes from lingua which means tongue. You can still use language without the tongue for example american sign language. In 400 bce indian scholar was studying the vedic poems, he wanted to understand the order in which it is- language is rule based. Without rules in language, you can" talk to each other. All languages have 5 basic things in common: a finite set of distinctive sounds used to make words and to convey various types of meaning- most languages have around 40 to 45 distinct sounds. 50 to 55 is the number of distinct sounds our vocal system can produce. All languages have words: grammatical structure- ways of putting words together to create sentences/paragraphs.
