Document Summary

Appearance of homo erectus represents a real rupture in our lineage. With homo erectus we can start to talk more about the human lineage. We can learn about the way it hunted, and its social life. A lot of people like to think that evolution is linear and progressive. It"s nice to think that each step makes us more advanced and complex. Humans and chimpanzees split around 4-6 million years ago in the evolutionary time line. There are not many chimpanzee fossils because most chimpanzees are found in tropical rainforests where bones do not preserve well. Films of chimps in the tai forest: first video: female chimp using a rock to smash palm nuts. There is a baby that is stealing the nuts as they get smashed: second video: they are smashing the nut again. It takes practice to learn how to break open the outer shell without completely destroying the inner nut: third video: the blow is extremely strong.
