Document Summary

Engendering health equity: a review of research and policy (sen et al 2002) One sound empirical reason for paying attention to health differences between women and men is that such differences clearly exist even where the socioeconomic gradient may not be strong. These differences may not be uniform or even move in the same direction. Despite these empirical differences and growing attention to health inequity generally, it has taken much longer for gender to be recognized as a contributing social factor than, say, socioeconomic class, race or caste. In part this is because of the still common fallacy of conflating gender with biological difference. Nevertheless, social factors and processes can be just as important for female-male differences as for other differences. Distinguishing between possible biological and social factors is important for analyzing not only health differences but also similarities between women and men.
