Interactions Between Cells and Their Environment
Cell Junctions
Cells interact with each other and the extracellular matrix (ECM) to form tissues
Image: different types of junctions
Three of the junctions in the above image (A, B, and C) are present in epithelial cells
cells that line cavities, organs, or surfaces
oAnchoring junctions anchor cells to each other or to the ECM
oOccluding junctions (e.g. tight junctions) keep the different matter on both sides
of the cell sheet separate
oChannel-forming junctions allow matter from one cell to get to a neighbouring
cell
oSignal-relaying junctions function as synapses
Anchoring junctions and occluding junctions hold a sheet of cells together
In polarised epithelial cells, junctions are arranged in a specific order
Polarised cells have different ends all mature epithelial cells are polarised
Some epithelial cell review:
oThe side facing the lumen/cavity/surface is referred to as the apical side
oThe microvilli are located on the apical side (note: not all epithelial cells have
microvilli)
oThe sides of the cell facing its neighbour cells is referred to as the lateral side
oThe side facing the ECM is referred to as the basal side
