Lumen: inside of the organelle, aqueous environment is different for different organelles. Membranes allow different process to occur in different parts of the cell. Scaffold for bio chemical activities: electron transport occurring in mitochondria. This needs lots of protein and generates atp. Specialized proteins that allow cells to respond to outside.
