Hypothesis for process of adaptation: for viability and competition for mating. Genotypes producing different phenotypes based on their environment. Water flea, either has long tail and head or short one, this occurs based on presence of predator. Phenotypic plasticity- describes the degree to which a given genotype can alter its phenotypic expression in order to acclimate to its surroundings. Phenotypic plasticity is trait specific, meaning it would be positive or negative for all traits, for humans it varies between each person and trait. If a trait can be easily reversed it is said to be more plastic. Maladapted phenotype- when an organism incorrectly adapts to the environment or change. Generalists- species with high phenotypic plasticity, meaning they do better in changing environments. Specialists- species with low phenotypic plasticity, meaning they do better if the environment does not change.
