Cri385 lecture one jan 4th, 2018: often focus on violent crime, gangs. Late 19th and early 20th: positivist criminology, crime is a set of facts, not just moral universe, need to treat crime not just as opportunity to punish but to see it scientifically. If we understand sources of crime we could prevent crime. Freud development of psychoanalysis: we all have dark set of drives and animal behaviour, but we can have control over it. Internal struggle with oneself to understand o(cid:374)e(cid:859)s o(cid:449)(cid:374) da(cid:396)k fo(cid:396)(cid:272)es a(cid:374)d to gai(cid:374) li(cid:271)e(cid:396)atio(cid:374) f(cid:396)o(cid:373) them but to never be fully free from them. Lombroso and other ideas that are more pallatbale: need radical drastic measure to change the world. Interested in understand how gender is shown, spunky vs fragile women: what(cid:859)s (cid:271)ei(cid:374)g communicated about youth in those images. Images about men: part of what keeps us in a limited space.
