Document Summary

The course is divided by time and topics into seven large parts: Pre ww i: convergence and globalization; the classical gold standard. Post war growth in europe 2 weeks. Japan and the asian miracle 2 weeks. Now a little bit about content, then on to the first lecture. In the fall term, the course is essentially chronological, beginning with what i call globalization before 1914 and ending with the great depression. We will spend most of the first term dealing essentially with the inter-war period. I would like to start with a few simple propositions and then see during the first term if they are supported by the facts. The failures of the inter-war period can be attributed to economic policy mistakes, the consequence of inadequate understanding and incompetence. Second, legislation (banking regulations) and legal (property rights, bankruptcy laws) and political systems (democracy)matter.
