GLOBALIZATION
KEY QUESTIONS:
- What is globalization and how has it impacted urbanization?
- How have the processes of globalization shaped cities in various parts of the world?
- What are some of the factors that differentiate the experiences of urbanization and global
change in cities at different moments in history and in various geographic locations?
GLOBALIZATION = a process (or set of processes) which embodies a transformation in the
spatial organization of social relations and transactions—assessed in terms of their extensity,
intensity, velocity and impact—generating transcontinental or interregional flows and networks
of activity, interaction, and the exercise of power
GLOBALIZATION AS TIME-SPACE COMPRESSION
“A sense of the shrinking of distances through the dramatic reduction in the time taken, either
physically (for instance via the transmission of electronically mediated information and images),
to cross them”
- Shrinking of the amount of time it takes to move across long distances
KEY ASPECTS OF GLOBALIZATION
- Expansion of international commerce
- Rising importance of private capital flows
- Increasing travel and migration
- Increased communication and interaction between peoples
- Communication and technology
GLOBALIZAITON AS DETERRITORIALIZATION? THE RISE OF CITIES?
“Economic globalization is constructing new forms of social organization that are supplanting, or
will eventually supplant the traditional states as the principal economic and political units of
world society”
UNEVEN GEOGRAPHIES OF GLOBALIZATION
- Globalization is not evenly experienced across international borders
- Some parts of the world/different parts of cities experience globalization differently
- Affluent 25% of the world
