60 year before the war, one member of the Hapsburg was in charge of Spain and another was
in charge Spanish Netherlands, and the Holy Roman empire
Holy Roman Empire had around 220 states in there. Each of the 220 state elect the Roman
Emperor. But the Hapsburg always made sure it was one of their people. There was a growing
tension between catholic and protestant region. France was worried because it was squished
between the Hapsburg empire.
1618, small local war that lead to the great religious war
1618 a new emperor was elected; he was catholic
King of bohemia, Ferdinand II was thrown out and Fredrick was the newly elected King. He
thought he was selected by god and was a message from god.
Max in 1620 crushes the Boeheim, at the white hill. Re-cat holism in Prague. He continued his
war, they decide to continue spread Catholicism.

French and England wanted Sweden and Danish because they were protestant.
In 1625, the Danish phase of the war begins. But because the French and Spanish allies up again
England they could not pay the Danish which ends the Danish phase.
Phase 3- Swedish Phase (1632)
They set up a border near the French, because during the war where the French invited them,
but they worried the French too because they were a large and strong army.
The French phase begin 1635
Richelieu believes that France was in threat of Hapsburg
By end of the war 8 million people less 4 million died 4 million fled. They were starved to death.
France and the Catholic met to make treat peace
Sweden and the Protestant met to make treat peace
