• Perspectives
o Studying history means dealing with perspectives of people from the past
o National humiliation
▪ Hong Kong is often portrayed as a symbol of national humiliation

▪ Ex. People who represented the Elite in China after Hong Kong became a
British Colony (political elite)
▪ Hong Kong is seen as a symbol of National Humiliation by the elites after

▪ Presenting Hong Kong as a place of refuge and opportunity
▪ Ex. People who see Hong Kong this way are those who are critical of the
Chinese Government

▪ Hong Kong had British laws so anyone persecuted in foreign countries
could run to Hong kong and be protected by british laws
▪ Merchants would also use Hong Kong because laws in Hong Kong would
protect them better than laws in china

within china and were subject to their laws and oppression, so hong kong

▪ As well, any time that british vessels were in the area and faced with a
storm, they could anchor their ships at hong kong and wait out the storm
▪ The british see Hong Kong as a form of national pride as part of this vast
british empire

to appreciate the transformation of Hong Kong

its contribution to economic development, political development,
social developments and cultural developments

• Most of the time people were able to enjoy a significant degree of
order and peace within hong kong

• This perspective is often ignored because much of the research in
Hong Kong was carried out by residents and tended to focus on

▪ Victoria Harbour separates Hong Kong island and Kowloon Peninsula

• Acquired in perpetuity (forever)
o New Territories
▪ Largest

▪ Outlying islands – 228km2
▪ Last to be inducted into British Colonies In 1898
• Acquired through a lease that the british signed with the Chinese
for a period of 99 years (until 1997)
• The Chinese never recognized the legality of these treaties (seen as unjust)
