Term 2 test: April 3rd, 2017
There will be 24 questions worth a total of 50 points. Answers should be a few
sentences to a short paragraph in length.
1. Basic history of archaeological ideas about the origins of agriculture. How do
archaeologists recognize domestication of plants and animals
archaeologically? How do we distinguish between different kinds of early

particular archaeologists have made on this topic (particularly V. Gordon
Childe). In particular, make sure that you understand the complex
relationship between agriculture, sedentism, social relations and cosmology.

to settlement and maize consumption. Be able to reference specific sites to
illustrate your point

Natufians) and the changes that took place with the origins of agriculture
(PPNA, PPNB, PPNC)

relates to other ways of classifying societies

Cahokia, Chaco Canyon, Salisbury Plain
9. In terms of early states, make sure that you understand basic history of
archaeological ideas about the development of state societies (Childe again!)
and ways that other archaeologists define cities and states
10. Make sure you know where, when and why the following are important for
our understanding of state-level societies: Erlitou, Uruk, Eridu,
Heirakonpolis, Harappa, Mohenja-Daro, Angkor, Chavin de Huantar,
Teotihican, basic characteristics of mayan cities.
