Context is everything the environment in which things happen. We have no truth about the past at all. We have documents, perspectives, pieces of evidence that may or may not be true. We have to evaluate the evidence and decide whether or not it"s true. The consequence determines why it"s important or why it matters. As a historian, you make the judgment, you decide the past. Feudalism had its roots in the roman imperial system. Patrons looking for people to do work, give them jobs, and clients looking for patrons. The people on the property said they would protect those who live there. The barbarians who attacked the peninsula had the idea of the companions of a warrior chief.
