Document Summary

Henry viii (8th) took the throne in england in 1509 and decided he wanted to marry catherine of. Aragon, who was his older brother (arthur"s) widow. He obtained a papal dispensation allowing him to marry his brother"s widow since it was against the law to marry someone close to you in blood. After multiple unsuccessful pregnancies, they have a daughter in 1516, mary. Henry fathers a son (henry fitzroy) with one of his mistresses, therefore he decides that the issue with producing sons is with catherine. This leads to his decision to dissolve his marriage to catherine. He recruits thomas wolsey to help him get an annulment in: the annulment goes to trial and the pope rejects the annulment. In the meantime, henry falls in love with anne boleyn, so he turns to thomas cromwell for help. Cromwell proposes that henry break away from rome since they wont grant the divorce.
