Document Summary

The nervous system"s function is to produce movement within a perceptual world created by the brain. The brain produces a reality that is adaptive for the species to survive. You do not need to see with your eyes. We do not need to hear with our ears . we perceive the world with our brain. sensation > perception > action. Example: there is a documentary on a blind guy who clicks his tongue and uses echolocation to see. You can literally see without your eyes as long as there are signals transmitted to your brain one way. Neuroplasticity is the hallmark of a nervous system function. It is necessary for learning and memory functions as well as for survival. The central nervous system functions on multiple levels. spinal cord > brainstem > forebrain > cortex. Lower levels are needed for reflexes and automatic behavior; it is evolutionary behavior. Brain system is organized hierarchically and in parallel.
