Document Summary

Different kinds of objects can have meaning: gestures, signages - graphical signs with conventional meaning, events/actions, words, sentences. We will only consider words and sentences. We will use these concepts to describe the meaning of sentences: truth-conditions, entailments. The most basic concept that we use to describe the meaning of sentences is that of the truth- conditions of a sentence. E. g. , consider this sentence: there is a ball on top of a cube: ask whether the sentence is true or false in different situations. Identify what conditions make the sentence true or false: the colour/size/other objects beyond the objects in question - does not affect the truth or false value of the sentence. If the meaning of the sentence is known, then you know in which situations it is true. Likewise, if someone can tell you in which situations the sentence is true, they know the meaning of the sentence.
