Document Summary

Language family = group of languages that share common ancestor related languages. For example, english related to other germanic languages, like dutch, german. Formal way of capturing properties of languages: uses analogy between samples and recipes, gg focus on recipe; other linguists collecting, categorizing loaves of bread. Extensional versus intentional: sample is extensional, recipe is intentional. Assume infinite set of sentences in english: sentences are not learned as sentences, know to manipulate parts of sentences, introduce new words, etc, grammar allows combination and recombination of parts of sentences. perhaps underlyingly, not so different: can encode messages of one language into another, seemingly different one. Claims that parameters = atoms of i-language: while in e language, words/morphemes are the atoms of e-language. Want to replicate generation of sentences, not just one sentence. Use grammar of latin, apply to new language. Now shift to terms unique to the language. Whether or not must have explicit subject.
