PITCH: PITCH - high or low INTERVAL - distance between two pitches SCALE - ordered arrangement of pitches TUNING - pitches to which an instrument is set MELODY - a succession of pitches (one following another) PITCH HORIZONTAL TUNE - a simple singable melody (2 lines) PHRASE - section of melody (1 line, we breathe between phrases) MOTIVE - short fragment (captures an idea) MOTION (conjunct/disjunct) RANGE - distance frm high to low SHAPE - can u hear the shape of the melody FORM - structure w/in a melody, what to expect, predictable PITCH VERTICAL HARMONY - consonance/dissonance TEXTURE - monophony, polyphony, homophony or COUNTERPOINT (another melody competes) TIME: TEMPO - the speed (slow/fast) RHYTHM - succession of durations (measured or unmeasured) BEAT - underlying reg pulse (strong/weak) METER - the reg grouping of beats (unmeasured, duple, quadruple, triple, compound, mixed) - CHANGING METERS (MIXED): switching frm one meter to another - RUBATO - stretching/contracting of beats - SYNCOPATION - stressing the weak or off beats STRUCTURE: (most transparent way to convey structure is through repetition) TRANSPARENT - repetition, predictable HIDDEN - unpredictable, no repetition SERIALISM - composing w/ a series (eg pitches), parts of it are highly organized, but disorganized to our ears ALEATORIC/CHANCE - every performance is diff, dependent on chance MUSICAL FORMS: REPETITION: STROPHIC FORM - AAA THEMES & VARIATIONS - AAʼ Aʼʼ Aʼʼʼ CONTRAST:
