Ethics Lecture December 5, 2011 Normative Ethics • From Hobbes egoism until Singer animals and Moore • How we ought to behave Metaethics • Can we even identify what is good; what do we mean when we use ethical language Exam • Identification of quotations [no terms- like the categorical imperative] quotation from one of the primary texts; you want to identify the author and explain what they mean in the context of their argument; how the quotation pertains to their argument and what they are trying to get at- there are 5 of 10 and they are 5 marks each. Only need a few lines per quotation. • Section two: essay question. Analyze an ethical dilemma using the philosophers we studied. What would three philosophers say on that dilemma? Choice of 2 • Section three: essay question. Have to compare ideas and make an argument. Choice of 3 • Section four: essay question *from the lecture slide practice quotation Mill • Happiness is achievable for everybody
