Document Summary

This differs from goldman, dworkin, and freedman because they all advocate for a more individualistic type of autonomy, where the individual makes the choice by him or herself. Goldman advocates for using one"s value orderings to make decisions, Dworkin advocates one"s critical interests, which are interests one considers an integral part of the person"s life story. If the physician believes that treatments that cannot restore autonomous functioning is futile, and the patient believes that treatments are good so long as they prolong life, then there may be a conflict of beliefs. Informed consent is extremely important because it respects people"s autonomy, and it shows that the medical profession values their right to decide what is best for themselves. The reasonable results is interested in seeing whether the patient will appreciate and apply the information in a way that most other people would by choosing the result that will yield the objectively best results.
