Document Summary

Homeostasis: keeping the internal environment stable, in spite of changing external conditions. External conditions influence internal homeostasis: body able to compensate = normal functioning, body unable to compensate = disease/illness, ex. Extracellular fluid: the fluid that exists outside of the cell membrane. Acts as a buffer between external & internal environments. Contains interstitial fluid & blood plasma: can analyze blood to know ecf condition. When cells are packed tightly: stimulus, sensor, input signal, integrating center, output signal, target (the effector of change, response (the change in the stimulus- the change that we observe) Set point: a range of stimuli that won"t trigger the feedback loop. The body exists in a state outside of the range feedback loop initiates. Range of set points different for different cells & systems: oxygen in muscle large range, water in blood small range. Negative feedback loop: elicits a response that is different from the stimulus.
