NEUROANATOMY OF THE DEVELOPING SOCIAL BRAIN
CINGULATE CORTEX - NOT VISUALLY SEEN FROM OUTSIDE OF BRAIN
OLFACTORY BULB SENDS SIGNALS to amygdala (not thalamus)
o amygdala responsible for emotion
Basal ganglia (gray matter structure)
o important for dopaminergic activity and somatosensory function
o related to Parkinson's disease
Dorsal striatum = caudate nucleus + putamen
Human gestation period = 40wks (280 days)
o times from conception to birth
substantia nigra = where atrophy of dopaminergic systems taking place for
Parkinson's
limbic system also important for emotion
fear conditioning very amygdala dependent
Primate amygdala
mostly generalized from monkeys to humans
many assumptions being made
main information pathway (pic: orange -> brown -> red)
o info input -> lateral nucleus -> basal nucleus -> central nucleus
ventral striatum also very dopaminergic
o involved in motivated behaviour (addictions, etc.)
amygdala largely developed at birth (connections are there)
ex. 1
macaques (type of monkey)
o basic fear is lacking @ beginning of life
