Document Summary

Conducted by muzafer sherif in 1954 that studied the ways in which groups develop and function and to discover how prejudice and conflict developed between different groups of people. Before the trip, 22 11 year old boys were randomly divided into two groups. Groups lived separately for the first week to develop strong bonds with one another: once groups established, each group chose a name for themselves. Phase 2: when two groups met, conflict arose quickly and experimenters set up competitions between the two groups: rattlers won, intensifying conflict, groups name-called the other. Final phase: wanted to see if the groups could get along with one another: watch film and other simple activities: failed, set up a series of game problems to solve together. Eagles and rattlers soon made a truce and began eating together. Conclusion: groups naturally develop their own like culture, structure, and boundaries.
