Before the trip, 22 11 year old boys were randomly divided into two groups. Groups lived separately for the first week to develop strong bonds with one another: once groups established, each group chose a name for themselves. Phase 2: when two groups met, conflict arose quickly and experimenters set up competitions between the two groups: rattlers won, intensifying conflict, groups name-called the other. Final phase: wanted to see if the groups could get along with one another: watch film and other simple activities: failed, set up a series of game problems to solve together. Eagles and rattlers soon made a truce and began eating together. Conclusion: groups naturally develop their own like culture, structure, and boundaries.
