Document Summary

We are our genes, hair colour, weight, body, even personality, intelligence, political leaning, religiosity to different extents. Mental health also related to genetics (bipolar disorder has high heritability, so does schizophrenia | depression similar to personality traits) Genes can be changed, genome editing ok for diseases. Gene therapy can treat diseases, but is expensive! Want to quantify relationships between genes and explain why these relationships exist. Behaviour overt actions, internal thought processes (running, emotion, personality), controlled by nervous system. Genetics study of genes, (1) physical characteristics of genes (2) inheritance patterns of genes (some genes inherited together) Behavioural genetics study of how genes contribute to behaviour. Behavioural genetics: mechanism to explain behaviour, means to identify, treat and prevent behavioural disorders. Can be linked to one gene or several genes. Can be cognitive, emotional, physical e. g. depression, high risk of repression limit exposure to stress. Influenced law, medicine, social policy, culture e. g. highly predisposed to misbehave higher risk of incarceration.
