Play and regulation of aggression Since 1960s, our culture has leaned towards the developmental philosophy of Rousseau: children are naturally self-regulating, positive, creative, and good. Only culture makes them bad. Hobbes: the child is a force of nature, willful, destructive, capable of self-harm, in dire need of careful, cautious, and intense socialization and damned in the absence of social order. Psychoanalysis not a derivative of Hobbes, Humanism not a derivative of Rousseau Frued- aggression is innate, socially induced frustration between reality and pleasure principle. Aggression is natural and not added to a peaceful temperament. Young kids are fundamentally egocentric. Their own desires are paramount and are only bounded by the immediate consequences. Aggression manifested at eighteen months This aggression is dependent on the low-level, fast maturing brain structures like the hypothalamus and periaqueductal grey. Aggressive behavior peaks in KG and declines over time By four, most children are social. Those who are not are aggressive forever. Chronically aggressive people are suspicious, narcissistic, self-centered, apathetic, and have inappropriate and brittle high self-esteem. Chimps are just as aggressive as kids in their social groups Most of the in-group aggression in chimps is related to dominance hierarchies, like in humans Starts off as teasing, becomes dominance displays as teenager, and could become physically violent as adults.
