Syntax: order that ideas are presented - 100,000 years ago. Puts order in abstract representations of words -> meaning. Complex layers; build larger lexicon of ideas -> development of human history/ culture. Both vocabulary and syntax are cultural, not absolute (context) Words we make up -> meaning (influenced by words we use)
