Coping resources and coping behaviour

•Coping resources and behavior:
-its an interaction. the effect of a stressor on mental health will b moderated by typa
coping resources/moderators. At the same level of stress, if one of us has soc support,
we wont experience that effect of the stressor. . the moderating effect is also known
as “buffering effect/hypothesis”

-social resources: social spport etc
-coping resources that are personal: personality etc
-strategies( how do u behave/change the situation )= cognitive/denial /selective or
positive comparisons. Etc.
•Sense of coherence:
-very positive view. Its fatalistic. U believe anything that happens’d lead to sth good.
“it was meant to be”. Form of coping resource
-they try to b actively involced in life activities. See change as beneficial. See it as a
-ifu’re a hardy person its good.
•Sense of control (SOC)
-wat happens to me is upto me. I have control over wat happens to my life. No one
else is controlling my fate.
-personal powernessness( nothing is in our hands, and nothing we can do abt it.)<-
opposite to it.
-mastery etc. they allmean having high sense of control.

-most imp coping resource.
-(too much sense of control is bad . )
-flexibility increases ur sense of control. If sth goes wrong, u try to change
thesituation. If life gives u lemon, make lemonade.
-too much trust aint good.
doesn’t mean everyone wid high sense of control has lower distress.
•Basic pattern wat it looks like. As sense ofcontrol increases, distress decreases. Until
a point where ther’es a slight upturn. There’s only a certain level upto which it
decreases distress. Too much instrumentalism/sense of control isn’t good.
•SOC: main effect:
-they’re part of sense of control.
-the more the things that’d happen to ur life…more awards etc, increase in SOC.
-ple not having high sense of control, theydont try to cope, don’t try to change it.
-if u’re good in this life, u’ll b good in the after life (before marx)
-fatalist: wid no sense of control/powerlessness.
-instrumentalist: high sense of control low powerlessness
•SOC: mediating effect:
-mediating effect is part of coping model. Stressor u have decrease low sense of
controlleads to distress.
-part of deterring model.
ur sense of control can decrease—stressor—lower distress.
here, SOC comes before the stressor. And in other model it was after stressor.
-wen u’re teenager and not time to have a child..that cud lead to distress . but if u
have supporting parents/partner, it cud b a better experience.
-part of coping model.
- high level of eco hardship—hi distress, but those wid high SOC wid not lead to high

-we can substitute SOC wid support system/networks/hardiness, etc. (moderating
-low education (parents/kid),
-can also vary by ur gender. Men identify so much wid their role as breadwinner that
loss of ecco hardship effects them more than women. Men wid low soc have it really
ruff compared to women.
-minority status: in US…minority low SOC. Undesirable events - Sm1 getting
raped , etc. age. As u age, soc decrease…diseases/retirement etc.
-22,500 canadians. Very representative.
-sense of control is low in those in some elementary school edu, increases in those
wid some university edu..same as ba, ma. Diploma a bit low.
-the reason sense of control increase in uni is that u deal wid deadlines, crappy
profss etc. have to write papers /wrk as consultant etc.
those wid no eco hardship have low sense of control almost the same as those who
have eco hardship.
