Why study mental health (wheaton 2001)
osome reasons why study it:
-means distribution wen we look at soc surveys, mental health outcomes are
unequally distributed. Genetic+ natural. Majority health prob pple are
disadvantages, racial, poor.
-more depression amng pple wove made least amnt of money. tells us that mental
health is due to soc ineq.
oIndividuals to social structure
-how ure connected to soc structure, school, wrk place
oWe dont ever disagree tat ur genes and ur mind has an effect on ur mental health
outcomes, but also look at the env. Bio and psy also agree with this. U can have
genetic disposition of schitzophrenia but not all do.
oWe dont look at specific mental disorders. We look at continuum. 1(least depressed)-
10 (most).
oWen soldiers come bk from war post tramatic stress disorder. But not all of them.
Its specifically targets those whore at the highest risk of developing disorders. May
b specific pple (who saw murders),develop it, not all . Need to b specific. Under wat
conditions this happens
o[name two of the 5 reasons why shud u study mental health=exam qs]
Role of soc in study of mental health.
oSoc env. As a starting pt.
oWats going on how mental health probs distributed. Miss wrk, school, cost soc as a
whole.
oBiomania:
-attritbuting everything htat happens to biology. Link everything to biology.
-but we say bio is imp but also look at the env factors.
oNeed for basic science approach.
-soc of mental health is not applied. Allows to see the process. Wat happens wen ure
in a soc grp. We try to see wy. We see the process.
oMethodological tecs are same as economics.
