Document Summary
1. 1 the science of statistics: statistics: science dealing with collection, classi cation, analysis, interpretation of info/data; involves collection, classifying, summarizing, organizing, analyzing, presenting, interpreting numerical and categorical info. E. g. graphics, pie charts, average, spread, range, frequency, histogram, median, scatter plot, mode, in- terquartile range: inferential statistics: utilizes sample data to make estimates, decisions, predictions, other generalizations about larger set of data. E. g. hypothesis test, con dence interval, ordinary least squares. 1: after variables of interest for every unit in sample/population measured, data analyzed by descriptive or inferential statistical methods, statistical inference: estimate/prediction/other generalization about population based on info contained in sam- ple. Use info in sample to learn about larger population: need to know reliability of inference (how good it is) To be certain inference about population correct: include entire population in sample. Because of resource constraints, can"t work with whole populations, base inferences on sample.
